Moulton Museum + Jeff Sewell proudly presents “Back to the Ranch” an exhibit preserving the living history found in Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park.
Moulton Museum will be opening Jeff Sewell’s “Back to the Ranch” exhibit on March 9th – June 29th. The opening reception will be held on March 9th at Nellie’s Gallery in Laguna Hills.
February 23, 2023 (Laguna Hills, CA) – The exhibit “Back to the Ranch” created by award-winning Laguna Beach artist Jeff Sewell. Sewell is a native Southern Californian working in collaboration with Moulton Museum, an Orange County-based museum working to keep the history of the region and its ranching era alive by archiving, restoring, and preserving historical artifacts. The exhibit of fifteen new paintings by Jeff Sewell, captures the natural beauty of Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park, formerly part of the historic Moulton Ranch starting in 1895. This ranchland was once painted by William Wendt and many other historical plein air artists. These works will be displayed in Mayén Olson frames.
Jeff Sewell, an award-winning American Artist focusing on California Impressionism, was born and raised in Southern California. Jeff won Best in Show at Laguna Plein Air Painters Associations’s (LPAPA) 24th Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational. Without a formal art degree, Jeff considers himself a “sponge” as he takes inspiration from other artists and his surrounding environment to develop his own artistic style. Predominantly painting “en plein air” allows Jeff to translate information through color and tone while adding a sense of depth and dimension to the landscape before him. Rather than making an exact replication of the subject, Jeff’s love for Impressionism inspires him to inject his own style and personality into his work. Sewell hopes his “less information is more” approach encourages viewers to fill in all the details and explore the different emotions each painting evokes. Jeff is the founder and lead mentor of LPAPA’s Plein Air Project, an educational program encouraging 4th graders to explore outdoor painting. Sewell has mentored over 5,000 students.
“Back to the Ranch” will transport you back in time to the early history of Orange County. “We are incredibly fortunate to work with such talented individuals like Jeff Sewell who have the ability to capture what it was like to live on the ranch all those years ago,” shared Jared Mathis, President of Moulton Museum and CEO of The Moulton Company.
The exhibit will be on display in Nellie’s Gallery at Moulton Museum located at 25258 Cabot Road in Laguna Hills. Aliso and Wood Canyons is now managed by OC Parks. “Back to the Ranch” is curated by Jennifer Keil, Cindy Keil, and Jeff Sewell. The exhibit “Back to the Ranch” will open with a reception on March 9 at 6 pm and will run through June 29. Visitors who attend the opening reception will have the opportunity to meet the artist, Jeff Sewell, and learn about his plein air technique. On Sunday, April 2nd, Jeff Sewell will conduct a painting demonstration from 2 to 5 pm with limited space. Please RSVP on the Moulton Museum website.

Starting in 1874, twenty-year old Bostonian, Lewis Fenno Moulton, learned to run a ranching operation by working at Rancho San Joaquin (today known as Irvine Ranch). Over the next twenty years, Moulton leased and purchased 21,723 acres, which later became the Moulton Ranch.
