"My time at 70 Degrees taught me several different aspects of what it is like to be an archivist and public historian in the field. I handled so many unique artifacts from a variety of time periods, like old photographs from Crystal Cove Beach and farming tools from 19th-century ranches, later to be imported into the Omeka and UCI special collection databases. Jennifer and Cindy Keil also trained me on how to be a better writer and editor for elements such as museum programs and didactics. I spent countless hours learning the intricate details that go into designing an exhibit, installing in cultural centers like the Muckenthaler and Laguna Playhouse. After finishing my program, Jennifer and Cindy continue to offer their support in my journey. They have helped shape me into the historian I am today and inspired me to continue my passion for Orange County History."
As an intern for 70 Degrees, I was given the unique opportunity to combine my interests of photography, history and archiving all in an applied and practical setting. Jennifer and Cindy were fantastic to work with, and they provided me the necessary tools to continue to hone my craft as a student majoring in history. From the methodology of archiving to the systems employed during my time as an intern, I felt very confident by the end that I had been given a great foundation to continue to build upon my skills and interests. I cannot express my gratitude enough for the meaningful experiences that I was able to embark on as an intern. Much gratitude and thanks to Jennifer and Cindy! Their purpose and passion for preservation and storytelling is second to none. I can strongly attest that anyone would be fortunate to work alongside them in their mission at 70 Degrees!
