Richard Henry Dana Jr. embarked on a sailor’s adventure aboard the brig Pilgrim in 1834 where he sailed to California from Boston. This journey was captured when he wrote Two Years Before the Mast, published in 1840. Learn more about the city of Dana Point by reading our Field Notes.
70 Degrees is re-designing the Dana Point Historical Society website. Visit the museum in person or virtually to learn how Sydney H. Woodruff developed this coastal community as a syndication in the 1920s.
Dana Point Historical Society is a volunteer, non-profit organization which was established in 1987 in order to celebrate and preserve the history of Dana Point for current and future generations.

According to the Library of Congress, “Two Years Before the Mast (1911) is based on the diary Dana kept while at sea. First published in 1841, it is one of America’s most famous accounts of life at sea. It contains a rare and detailed account of life on the California coast a decade before the Gold Rush revolutionized the region’s culture and society.”

It is American Artist Appreciation Month. Gallery Dana Bay on Del Prado has been exhibiting artists from the area such as Chris Justice and John Cosby. Justice will have a solo exhibit at Soka University from September 26, 2024 – January 24, 2025.

The Maritime Festival will be on September 13-15, 2024 at the Ocean Institute. They will feature local vendors, food trucks, Sailor Camp, local marine life, tall ships, and more! The festival has been a beloved community event for the past 40 years, and we are thrilled to continue celebrating Dana Point’s rich maritime history.
The Ocean Institute is a 501(c)(3) non-profit education facility. 100% of the proceeds from the weekend go directly back into their operations and mission of using the ocean as our classroom. They inspire children to learn. Come celebrate with us and be a part of this treasured community tradition

John Wayne Paddle Up

One of John Wayne’s most famous sayings was, “Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway.” Now his fans can Paddle Up, to raise funds for the cancer foundation that bears his name. The John Wayne Cancer Foundation will present the Paddle Up pickleball tournament in Newport Beach, California, this fall. “Pickleball is a fun and engaging way for us to raise funds for the all-important fight against cancer,” said Ethan Wayne, Director of the John Wayne Cancer Foundation.
Jennifer Keil presented to the Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary Club. Jennifer is a public historian snd entrepreneur that specializes in processing archives, digitizing collections, and curating exhibitions. She and her sister, Cindy Keil, opened up their organization, 70° to better manage and grow cultural institutions, while contextualizing the narratives for every project.
