Society typically associates wartime memories with battlefield experiences, but women endured an entirely different dimension of the war—the home front. Jennifer Keil wrote about how oral histories reveal women faced another “home front.” Food shortages, foreign soldiers in their own homes, and constrantly vulnerability to air raids transformed women’s lives.

Book of the Month

The Lady in Gold: The Extraordinary Tale of Gustav Klimt’s Masterpiece, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer by Anne-Marie O’Connor tells the dramatic true story of one of Gustav Klimt’s most famous paintings, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I. The book explores the painting’s creation in early 20th-century Vienna, its theft by the Nazis during World War II, and the long legal battle to reclaim it. It follows Adele Bloch-Bauer, the Jewish woman who inspired the artwork, and her niece, Maria Altmann, who fought to recover the painting decades later. The story highlights themes of art, history, justice, and resilience.
