Interviewing a Historian Entrepreneur: Jennifer Keil
When we think of entrepreneurship, we usually think of products to sell, direct services to provide, or some sort of liaison role. In a way, entrepreneurship incorporates each of these aspects, but is not limited to them. Sometimes entrepreneurship is more creative, educational, or foundational. Entrepreneurship is all about having market alertness, finding a need, and then fulfilling that need. University of California Irvine ANTrepreneur program director, Ryan Foland, suggests people wanting to become entrepreneurs should find a need and solve that need. Moulton Museum
Join us this Sunday, October 2nd from 12-6pm for the Laguna Hills Heritage Day! We are celebrating the 30th anniversary of incorporation of the city. We have been collaborating with the Moulton Family since 2017. They owned Rancho Niguel in Orange County. It comprised nearly 22,000 acres. Moulton Ranch is now expanded into other parts of California where annual roundups and brandings. We partner with the California Rangeland Trust and are conducting an oral history series with multi-generational families throughout the state. We opened Moulton Museum in September 2022. We love the etymology of museum terms! We are curating 1874: Into the West at the Moulton Museum. Join us at the Moulton Ranch Center where we will be opening the Moulton Museum! We will be showcasing our exhibition “1874: Into the West” film with tours of our new museum. We are featuring the Wells Fargo Museum collection along with turn-of-the-century inventions. Our partners include Bowers Museum, Chapman University, University of California, Irvine, Dana Point Historical Society, Laguna Woods History Center, Saddleback Area Historical Society, San Juan Capistrano Historical Society, Sherman Library and Gardens, First American Title Company and Festival of Arts collections. Preservation Month
It’s been an incredible Preservation Month! The National Trust for Historic Preservation designated the month of May to raise awareness of America’s historic sites to celebrate the “diverse and unique heritage of our country’s cities and states.” 70 Degrees is excited to showcase some of our clients’ projects. We use digital technologies to archive, preserve, and exhibit. We have redesigned the Laguna Woods History Center‘s website with more videos and digital collections. Step back into Orange County’s 1960s housing development of Leisure World with Ross Cortese’s retiree master planned community. Southwest Oral History Association 2022 Conference
Jennifer participated in the 2022 Southwest Oral History Association Conference that was held April 1-3, 2022. The theme for the 40th conference was “The Memories Matter: Oral History, Hope, and Community.” Keil presented California Community Oral History on April 1, 2022 at 2:15-3:15 PM via Zoom. Jennifer shared how 70 Degrees archives, preserves, and exhibits community history. Aliso Viejo Ranch and Laguna College of Art + Design exhibits were featured which opened in 2021. Moulton Museum will open summer of 2022.

Your Place in the Multiverse: Jean Lowe
Step into an artist’s world which is staged from familiar, commercial storefronts to grandiose household décor. Jean Lowe uses primarily craft materials including papier-mâché to transform this gallery into an immersive experience. Lowe’s work has been created over the last twenty years. While visiting, make sure to watch the gallery film featuring Lowe’s portrayal of an artists’ critique of her past exhibits. This exhibit will run from March 19, 2022 – September 18, 2022. Orange County Docent League – Spring 2022
The Orange County Docent League will be hosted by Jennifer Keil, Director of Moulton Museum, at Aliso Viejo Ranch on April 11, 2022 for the spring event. The conference is titled, The Making of a Museum: Creation of a Docent Organization for the 21st Century. We will have Eddie Grijalva, President of Saddleback Area Historical Society, join us on Zoom. He recalls meeting Mr. Moulton while living on Moulton Ranch in the 1930s. Museum of Making Music
We recently visited Carlsbad to see the newly renovated Museum of Making Music. It is located within the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) headquarters. As you enter the lobby, you will see on the right the Museum Store and entrance to the museum. Make sure to obtain a stylus from the docent for the touch displays throughout the museum. The Museum of Making Music describes their renovation as a place with “deeper stories, more hands-on interactivity, and a chance to connect to music making on a whole new level!” Our favorite gallery was the Sit & Play display where guests are encouraged to play instruments. Permanent Exhibit Step back in time to Avalon’s historical founding period detailing the development by the Wrigley Family. The permanent exhibit display explains the development of this island. Hollywood legends used to live here and frequent it.
